Before high school, my hair saw the occasional cornrow. Long braids were never really my thing. They entered my life only after I realized that leaving home for boarding school meant no more of my biweekly trips to the hair salon. More notably, I knew there would not be a hair stylist who catered to my roots within several miles. I needed something that was nice and simple, suitable for my hair type, and most importantly, long-lasting. The box braid hairdo became my best option.
Insight my Locks Give about Me:
1. I live for convenience and comfort. Coming to Emma Willard, the last thing I wanted was to fuss about my hair. In its au naturel state, my hair is as thick as thick gets. Having to comb my hair everyday would leave me with 25 bald spots come Commencement Day. Definitely not my graduation wish. I wear braids because they are easy to maintain. I'd say it's a privilege to wake up in the morning and know that I don't have to untangle my hair, or straighten or curl my hair, or do whatever else that exerts so much extra energy. When I have so many things to attend to, my hairstyle gives me one less thing to worry about. As a matter of fact, if you take a close look (but don't look too close, I don't need a creeper in my hair) you will notice that my locks are not actually braided. To be accurate, I wear twists, which require two strands rather than three. While both styles are equally manageable, at the end of the day, twists are easier for me to take out. Generally speaking, I would describe my style as comfort before fashion, and my hairdo reflects that.
2. I would say that I am a rather patient individual. No? You don't agree? Okay, well how about you sit down in a salon chair with 2-4 stylists looming over your head, turning your head from one direction to the next, back and forth; they pinch at your scalp in one spot, and pull at a strand of hair in another spot. You remain seated for about...four hours. Most people can't sit still for twenty minutes. Now tell me, patience or no patience needed?
3. My hair suggests that I am traditional. I could have asked for a fun color to be dyed into my braids. I could have requested brown or blonde tips. But, as I said earlier, I prefer to maintain a nice and simple look. So I stuck to the solid black of my natural roots.
So there you have it - the story behind my hair.
